Description
Saint-Jean-du-Doigt near Lanmeur in Finistère — Church and fountain with a scene of wheat threshing with flails in the foreground. An 1865 lithograph from La Bretagne contemporaine.
This beautiful view combines Brittany’s architectural heritage with a lively scene of agricultural work. In the foreground, several peasants in traditional costume thresh grain spread across the ground. The movement of the flails, broad-brimmed hats and traditional headdresses give this scene particular interest for the history of rural life and agricultural practices.
Behind the workers stands the architectural ensemble of Saint-Jean-du-Doigt: the church with its soaring spire, the fountain and the entrance to the church enclosure. Stone buildings, trees and a small thatched roof create a transition between rural life and religious architecture.
The sky occupies a significant part of the composition. The effects of clouds and light emphasise the silhouette of the church tower and add depth to this particularly lively view.
The print bears the title “Église et fontaine de St. Jean-du-Doigt près de Lanmeur (Finistère)”.
