Description
Pont-l’Évêque in Calvados, Normandy — Church of Pont-l’Évêque. Original two-tone lithograph from 1852, published in La Normandie illustrée.
This view shows the church from its eastern end, with its tall pointed windows, buttresses and decorative details standing out in front of the tower. The vertical composition emphasises the height of the building and leaves ample space for the cloudy sky.
The foreground brings life to this architectural view. Carts, some of them covered, stand in front of the low buildings at the foot of the church. A figure accompanied by horses animates the waterside. On the right, an old house completes this glimpse of the town in the mid-nineteenth century.
The banks, stones and foreground vegetation give depth to the composition. The two-tone printing combines precise drawing with delicate lighting effects in the sky and across the façades.
