Description
An antique sepia wash drawing depicting a picturesque old house possibly located in Salins-les-Bains in the Jura region of France. This suggested location remains a hypothesis and has not been confirmed.
The composition highlights a tall building with uneven walls and small openings. A prominent chimney rises above the steep roof, whose projecting eaves cast a deep shadow across the façade. To the left, a smaller adjoining structure extends this picturesque ensemble, while a rising passage runs alongside the house on the right.
The brown wash lends depth to the masonry and evokes the passage of time. Freely rendered details and contrasts between light and shadow give the scene a particularly evocative atmosphere.
Work on paper bearing an indistinct monogram at the lower right. Artist unidentified. An antique work probably dating from the 18th or early 19th century, with no visible date.
The sheet has cut corners and is presented on a light-coloured mount with a ruled border.
Condition: age-related paper browning, small marks and irregularities along the edges. Small holes and losses are visible, particularly in the upper section. The mount also shows signs of age. Please examine the photographs for details and condition.
Sheet dimensions: approximately 25.6 × 19.5 cm.
Image dimensions: approximately 17.5 × 12 cm.
A charming piece for a collection of antique drawings or an interior celebrating historic architecture and old houses.
