Montbeliard Doubs Württemberg Castle, Antique Wash Landscape on Paper

Description

Montbeliard, Doubs — An antique Montbeliard castle drawing in brown wash on paper mounted on card, provisionally dated to the 18th–19th century.

This small architectural landscape depicts the Château des Ducs de Wurtemberg rising above a foreground of trees. Its two distinctive towers dominate the scene, while the adjoining residential building extends to the left. A smaller building with a stepped gable adds another architectural feature to the composition.

Fine drawn lines describe the windows, rooflines and masonry. Transparent brown washes suggest light and shade across the buildings, with stronger tones defining the foliage and the ground below. The largely unworked sky provides a quiet background against which the castle’s silhouette stands out.

The combination of architectural detail and freely handled vegetation gives this drawing both decorative appeal and interest as a view of Montbéliard. Its small horizontal format and restrained brown palette would suit a collection devoted to French castles, regional views or antique works on paper.

The artist is unidentified. The proposed 18th–19th-century dating is an estimate; no definite signature or inscribed date has been identified. A handwritten annotation is present on the reverse.
