Description
This Taninges lithograph depicts the village in Haute-Savoie France in 1864, following a drawing by Félix Benoist. The composition brings together Alpine scenery, traditional architecture and figures going about their daily activities.
The church and its tall bell tower occupy a prominent position on the right, with village buildings extending towards the centre. Mountain slopes rise behind the settlement, giving the scene a spacious and distinctly Alpine character.
On the left, a rocky watercourse flows beneath bridges and alongside the village. Figures gathered near the water, people conversing in the foreground and riders approaching the church animate the view. Stones and lengths of timber beside the path add interest to the foreground.
Fine detail in the buildings and terrain contrasts with the softer treatment of the distant mountains. Blue-grey shading and warm tones create an atmospheric landscape while preserving the clarity of the architectural features.
The printed caption identifies Taninges in Haute-Savoie. This original nineteenth-century lithograph would appeal to collectors of French Alpine views, Savoyard heritage and historical village scenes.
The sheet retains generous margins around the image, allowing the printed caption to remain visible when appropriately mounted.
