Description
Vienne, Isere — an antique lithograph depicting the River Rhone and its surrounding landscape, dated 1819.
This Vienne Isere lithograph bears the printed inscription “C. F. Bourgeois, 1819” and the printer’s credit “Imp. Lithog. de F. Delpech.”
The composition presents a rural view of the Rhone near Vienne. Large foreground trees frame a winding track with figures and riders, while animals and a small building introduce further details into the landscape. Beyond them, the river runs beneath wooded slopes and open hills under a cloud-filled sky.
Carefully rendered foliage contrasts with the lighter hillsides and distant scenery. The result is a picturesque view of the Rhone landscape as represented in the early nineteenth century.
The original French title reads “Vue du cours du Rhône aux environs de Vienne”, followed by “dép. de l’Isère.” These inscriptions identify the general location; the precise viewpoint has not been established.
