Description
Crémieu Isère watercolour depicting Rue Frandin, signed A. Cornollier and dated 19 May 1946.
This vertical street scene captures the character of old Crémieu through its closely grouped houses, weathered façades and irregular rooflines. The location is identified by the handwritten inscription “Crémieu – Rue Frandin” at the lower left, beside the date “19/5/46”. The signature “A. Cornollier” appears at the lower right.
Tall buildings on the left lead the eye into the narrow street. Shuttered windows, stone surrounds and projecting eaves are described with careful line work. On the right, an exterior staircase rises to an open doorway, while patches of exposed masonry enliven the pale walls.
A small group of figures brings a sense of everyday life to the middle distance. Warm ochres and browns contrast with cool grey and mauve shadows, beneath a softly washed, cloudy sky. The composition balances architectural detail with the transparency of watercolour.
Both dated and identified by location, this work would appeal to collectors of Crémieu views, Isère landscapes, Dauphiné subjects and French architectural watercolours.
