Description
An antique pen and brown wash drawing depicting Telemachus addressing the assembled sages of Crete, an episode from Fénelon’s The Adventures of Telemachus.
Standing on the right in classical dress, Telemachus gestures towards a group of attentive elders gathered beneath tall trees. A seated, bearded figure holds an open book, while books and a scroll occupy the foreground. The subject evokes the discussion of the laws of Minos during the selection of a new king of Crete.
Fine pen outlines describe the faces, drapery and foliage. Layers of brown wash create contrasting areas of light and shade, lending depth to the wooded setting. Multiple ruled ink borders frame the composition.
The artist is unidentified. This anonymous work in the Neoclassical tradition is probably nineteenth century; its precise date has not been established.
Sheet dimensions: 23.2 × 17.5 cm.
Condition: light paper toning, scattered staining, handling marks and minor creases and edge wear. Four mounting strips and a pencil annotation are visible on the reverse. Please examine the photographs for the condition of the sheet.
An appealing work on paper for collectors of antique drawings, classical subjects and illustrations inspired by French literature.
