Description

Tang Dynasty Camel Rider Rubbing

This Tang dynasty camel rider rubbing depicts a richly dressed warrior seated upon a camel and accompanied by a single attendant.

The mounted figure wears an elaborate headdress and an ornate costume possibly representing ceremonial armour. He holds a long sword in his raised hand, while the attendant standing behind the camel carries a tall ceremonial object decorated with tassels.

The unusual subject, dynamic composition and large dimensions make this an impressive and highly decorative example of traditional Chinese graphic art.

Possible Tang Dynasty Iconography

The appearance of the warrior, his costume and the presence of the camel may relate the original composition to the artistic world of the Tang dynasty, which ruled China from AD 618 to 907.

During this period, China maintained extensive commercial and cultural relations with Central Asia. Camels were essential for transporting travellers and valuable goods along the Silk Road and consequently became important symbols of trade, travel and contact between different cultures.

The Tang attribution concerns the possible period or inspiration of the original image. In the absence of an inscription, archaeological reference or documented provenance, the precise date and source of the original relief cannot be guaranteed.

The present sheet is a later Chinese rubbing, probably produced during the twentieth century after, or in the style of, an earlier carved composition.

Traditional Chinese Rubbing Technique

Traditional Chinese rubbings are produced by applying thin, dampened paper to a carved stone or another hard surface. The paper is carefully pressed into the recessed design and then dabbed with ink.

The carved lines remain pale while the surrounding raised areas receive the ink, creating a detailed impression of the original relief.

This historic technique was developed in China to record and preserve inscriptions and carved images. It later became an important scholarly and artistic medium in its own right.

Condition

The thin paper displays numerous folds, creases and surface wrinkles. There are also handling marks, slight staining, edge irregularities and small areas of wear.

The horizontal and vertical folding lines are clearly visible. These characteristics are consistent with the delicate paper traditionally used for large Chinese rubbings.

Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an essential part of the condition report.

A large and visually striking work for collectors of Chinese art, Tang-inspired imagery, Silk Road subjects, traditional Asian printmaking and equestrian or camel iconography.
