Description
Chinese Craftsman Carving a Guardian Lion
An unusual miniature Chinese sculpture depicting a craftsman working on a large seated Foo dog, also known as a Chinese guardian lion.
The artisan stands beside the imposing animal, holding a raised mallet in one hand and applying a carving tool with the other. This lively composition provides a fascinating representation of traditional craftsmanship.
Despite measuring only 3.4 cm in height, the sculpture contains numerous carefully modelled details. The craftsman’s clothing, hairstyle, tools and working position can be distinguished, together with the stylised features of the guardian lion.
The two figures are cast together in silver-coloured metal upon an irregular integral base. The precise composition of the metal has not been tested, and no hallmark has been observed.
