Description
Montmelian in Savoie France is depicted in this original lithograph dating from circa 1864, based on a composition by Félix Benoist. Viewed from the banks of the Isère River, the scene brings together the town, a stone bridge and the surrounding Alpine landscape.
The river occupies the foreground and leads the eye towards the bridge and the buildings beyond. The bridge provides a strong architectural focus, connecting the riverbanks and guiding the viewer into the composition.
On the left, the prominent rocky height overlooking Montmelian contrasts with the lower buildings beside the water. Distant mountains complete the view, creating a succession of planes from the riverbank to the Alpine horizon.
Figures along the path animate the foreground and give a sense of scale to the surrounding landscape. Their presence introduces an element of everyday life into this detailed nineteenth-century view.
The composition combines architectural interest with the character of a riverside town. Delicate tonal transitions distinguish the water, buildings and mountain slopes, while the contrast between the foreground and the distant scenery gives depth to the image.
Printed on wove paper, this Montmelian lithograph will appeal to collectors of French topographical prints, Savoie views and compositions by Félix Benoist. Its river, bridge and mountain setting also make it an attractive subject for framing.
