Chatillon c1864 France Lake Bourget Félix Benoist Antique Lithograph

Description

Chatillon and Lake Bourget in Savoie France are depicted in this original lithograph dating from circa 1864, based on a composition by Félix Benoist. This lakeside view combines architecture, foreground figures and distant mountain scenery.

Two tall trees frame the composition, their trunks and spreading foliage creating a natural border around the lake. Beneath them, figures beside the shore introduce a sense of everyday life and give scale to the surrounding landscape.

On the left, the buildings of Chatillon rise above the wooded shoreline. Their architectural outlines contrast with the irregular vegetation and the broad expanse of water. The elevated setting draws attention to the relationship between the buildings and the lake below.

Lake Bourget extends into the distance between mountain slopes. The contrast between the detailed foreground and the softer outlines of the far shore creates depth, while the open water gives the scene its peaceful atmosphere.

The lithographic work captures the texture of the foliage, the shapes of the buildings and the gradual recession of the landscape. Darker foreground details lead towards lighter areas across the lake, allowing the eye to move naturally through the composition.

Printed on wove paper, this Chatillon view will appeal to collectors of French lake scenes, Savoie landscapes and nineteenth-century topographical prints. The framing trees and distant architecture also make it an attractive subject for display.
