Description
Laval 1865 drawing depicting the old town and its castle beside the River Mayenne in France. Signed Henry Tampard and dated 1865 this work combines graphite with white chalk highlights on warm-toned paper.
The composition brings together the castle’s tall round tower and conical roof with the old houses clustered along the riverbank. A stone bridge with pointed arches spans the water on the left. Beyond it a slender church spire rises above the rooftops. A boat in the foreground and small figures on the bridge bring life to the scene.
Particular attention is given to the architectural details. Timber framing, steep roofs, chimneys and masonry create a varied townscape. The imposing castle tower anchors the right-hand side while the river leads the eye through the composition.
Fine graphite lines describe the buildings and establish the shadows. White chalk highlights illuminate the clouds and reflections on the water. The warm colour of the paper provides a middle tone between the dark drawing and the lighter accents.
