Falaise Calvados Normandy France 1852 La Trinité Church Two Tone Lithograph

Description

This Falaise church lithograph dated 1852 depicts the Church of the Holy Trinity in the Calvados department of Normandy France. The original two-tone print presents a detailed architectural view enlivened by figures in the foreground.

The elaborate entrance porch forms the centre of the composition. Sculpted decoration, balustrades, pinnacles and tall windows reveal the richness of the building. Light and shadow bring depth to the stonework, while the tinted background creates a gentle atmospheric effect.

The surrounding square adds further interest. Women wearing traditional head coverings stand beside baskets and bundles, with other figures nearby. A large stone cross rises on the left, and neighbouring buildings complete the setting.

These everyday details complement the architectural subject and offer an appealing glimpse of nineteenth-century Normandy. The horizontal composition gives room to both the church and the activity around it.

The printed credits identify Félix Benoist as the draughtsman and A. Rouargue as the lithographer. The original French caption beneath the image names the church and the Calvados department.

An attractive antique print for collectors of Falaise and Normandy views, French religious architecture and historical townscapes.
