Description
This Appeville Annebault lithograph dated 1852 depicts the village church in the Eure department of Normandy France. The original two-tone print combines detailed religious architecture with a charming rural scene.
The church rises above the surrounding trees and cottages, its tall tower crowned by a slender spire. The elaborate entrance and traceried windows are carefully drawn, with fine attention to the stonework and decorative details. A softly tinted sky gives depth to the composition.
In the foreground, villagers meet along the road outside the church. A woman rides a donkey beside figures on foot, while a child and a dog add further interest. Their clothing, baskets and the rustic fencing evoke the everyday life of nineteenth-century Normandy.
The balance between architectural precision and animated figures makes this an attractive piece for both local history collectors and admirers of French rural landscapes.
The printed credits name Félix Benoist as the draughtsman, Bachelier as the lithographer and J. Gaildrau as responsible for the figures. The French caption beneath the image reads “Église d’Appeville dit Annebault” followed by “Eure”.
