Description
Pitcairn Island in an antique engraving from 1838 depicting wooden houses and islanders surrounded by tropical vegetation. The print bears the original French title “Intérieur de l’île Pitcairn” beneath the image and the heading “Archipel Pomoton” above.
A substantial two-storey wooden house dominates the right side of the composition. Its plank walls, open upper windows and thatched roof are carefully described. Figures appear at the upper openings, adding a sense of everyday activity to the building.
Several people gather in the foreground, while smaller houses stand further back among the trees. Their varied poses bring life to the scene and give scale to the surrounding architecture. The arrangement of the buildings leads the eye from the open foreground towards the more sheltered parts of the settlement.
On the left, a large tree with hanging aerial roots frames the view. Palm trees rise above the roofs, and dense foliage surrounds the houses. Fine engraved lines distinguish the textures of the timber, roofing and vegetation. Dark areas beneath the trees contrast with the lighter ground and open sky.
This small-format print combines architectural and landscape interest. It will appeal to collectors of Pitcairn Island views, South Pacific subjects, traditional wooden houses and nineteenth-century travel illustrations.Technique: engraving on paper.
