Description

Taiohae on Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas Islands in an antique engraving from 1836. This view depicts the bay under its historical name of Madisonville and bears the original French captions “Île Noukahiva” and “Vue de Madisonville”.

A large sailing ship occupies the left side of the composition. Its masts and intricate rigging stand against the dark rocky shoreline, accompanied by a smaller vessel and an open boat. In the foreground, a long canoe carrying a row of paddlers crosses the bay. The different vessels provide an engaging contrast of shapes and scale.

Carefully engraved waves animate the water and lead the eye towards the shore. A flag flies from a prominent rocky outcrop near the centre of the image. Beyond it, scattered buildings, palm trees and small figures appear along the waterfront beneath the mountain slopes.

The broad ridge in the background gives the scene depth, while sweeping clouds fill the sky above. Fine engraved lines describe the rigging, vegetation and irregular surfaces of the rocks. The darker foreground contrasts with the lighter distant landscape, creating a spacious coastal panorama.

Both original French captions remain visible in the margins. The historical spelling “Noukahiva” is part of the print’s original lettering and adds to its interest as a nineteenth-century representation of the island.
