Pariset Isere 1836 Rural House near Grenoble Original Pencil Drawing

Pariset pencil drawing dated 27 June 1836, depicting a rural house near Grenoble in the Isère department of France. The handwritten place name “Pariset” and date appear at the lower left.

The composition centres on a country house surrounded by trees beside a winding path. Its distinctive exterior staircase leads to a raised doorway above a broad arched opening. A small shuttered window, a tall chimney and exposed masonry add character to this study of traditional rural architecture in the Dauphiné region.

To the left, rocky ground and trees lead the eye towards a distant promontory. A small religious building and the remains of a tower can be seen on the skyline. These probably represent the Notre-Dame de Parizet chapel and the Tour sans Venin site, although the precise identification of the background monuments remains tentative.

Delicate pencil lines describe the foliage, while closer hatching gives depth to the walls, roof and sloping ground. Areas of untouched paper bring light to the scene and balance the more shaded passages.

The drawing offers an appealing glimpse of the landscape and vernacular architecture of Pariset during the first half of the 19th century.
