Description
Buti Italy Via Danielli is the subject of this original drypoint by Viviano Viviani, dated 1984 and signed in pencil. The print bears the caption “Via D. Danielli e Casa di Francesco Di Bartolo” and is numbered 10/50.
The composition explores a narrow street in the Tuscan town of Buti. Tall façades frame the gently curving passage, drawing the eye towards an archway in the distance. A substantial arched wooden doorway, an oval window and a projecting wall lantern give the foreground its distinctive architectural character. Plants beside the buildings soften the stone and plaster surfaces.
Printed in warm brown tones, the image combines fine linear detail with deeper areas of shadow. The close viewpoint conveys the enclosed atmosphere of an old Italian street, with particular attention to doorways, masonry and the changing angles of the façades.
The inscription identifies the setting as Via D. Danielli and the house of Francesco di Bartolo, also known as Francesco da Buti, the medieval commentator on Dante.
This original drypoint on copper comes from a series handprinted on a Dutch press using handmade rag paper from Cartiera Magnani in Pescia. The present impression retains generous margins around the compact architectural composition.
