Description
Buti Italy San Francesco Church is depicted at the end of a narrow street in this original 1984 drypoint by Viviano Viviani. Signed in pencil and numbered 10/50, the print bears the engraved caption “Buti Via Piavola e Chiesa di S. Francesco”.
The vertical composition looks along Via Piavola towards the church façade and its bell tower. Tall houses frame the street on both sides, their windows, doorways and projecting rooflines creating a strong sense of depth. The church provides a clear focal point beyond the closely spaced buildings.
Fine lines and layered hatching describe the architectural surfaces, while the warm brown ink gives the scene a gentle sepia appearance. The quiet street and carefully observed façades convey the character of this Tuscan town.
Executed in drypoint on copper, the print belongs to a series handprinted on a Dutch press using handmade rag paper from Cartiera Magnani in Pescia. Generous margins surround the image and its engraved caption.
The artist’s pencil signature and edition number 10/50 appear below the plate. The engraved inscription includes the abbreviated date “84”.
