Description
Buti Italy Bartolo House is the subject of this original drypoint by Viviano Viviani dated 1984. The composition depicts the street and house associated with Francesco di Bartolo in Tuscany. This impression is signed in pencil and numbered 10/50.
Tall façades frame a narrow street leading towards a church with a raised doorway, entrance steps and a circular window. Arched doors, an iron balcony and a commemorative plaque add distinctive architectural details to the composition.
The engraved title reads “Buti Via e Casa Francesco Di Bartolo”. Francesco di Bartolo, also known as Francesco da Buti, is remembered as a commentator on the Divine Comedy by Dante. This view brings together the architectural and literary heritage of Buti.
Printed in a warm brown tone, the image combines delicate linework with closely worked shading. The upright composition emphasises the height of the buildings and the depth of the street, while generous margins surround the image.
The work was engraved in drypoint on copper and printed by hand on handmade rag paper from Cartiera Magnani in Pescia. The stated edition comprised 50 numbered sets and a further 10 sets outside the commercial edition.
This impression bears the pencil signature of Viviano Viviani and the edition number 10/50 beneath the image. The date 1984 is engraved within the composition.
