Description

Paris Louvre lithograph from 1866 presents a detailed frontal view of the Denon Pavilion overlooking the square identified in the printed caption as Place Napoléon III.

The monumental façade fills the composition. Its curved roof, sculpted pediment, paired figures, columns and arcades are rendered with exceptional attention to architectural detail. The tinted background enhances the contrast between the building’s illuminated surfaces and deep shadows.

Groups of pedestrians and military figures animate the foreground. Women in crinoline dresses and men wearing top hats evoke the atmosphere of Paris during the Second Empire, while providing a sense of the pavilion’s impressive scale.

The print was drawn and lithographed by Philippe Benoist, with figures by Adolphe Bayot. Their contributions combine precise architectural representation with a lively urban scene.

The Denon Pavilion forms part of the Louvre Palace in the 1st arrondissement of Paris. Its name is visible above the central entrance in the image.
