Description

This Alexandre Calame Alps etching depicts a dramatic mountain landscape after a storm. Dating from 1841, it was made by the Swiss artist Alexandre Calame (1810–1864) after his own composition.

Steep mountain slopes surround a rocky valley, with weather-beaten trees and scattered boulders filling the foreground. Small figures emphasise the scale of the landscape, while breaks in the clouds reveal bright mountain peaks beyond.

The contrast between dark slopes and illuminated summits creates a powerful atmosphere. Detailed textures in the rocks, tree trunks and foliage reward close examination, giving this print both visual depth and decorative appeal.

The composition expresses the Romantic fascination with the grandeur of nature and the dramatic effects of changing weather in the Alps.

The sheet bears the French title “Vue des Hautes Alpes après un orage” and the inscription “Salon de 1841”.
