Description
This antique Mortain waterfall lithograph depicts Le Saut du Puits in the Manche department of Normandy France. Dating from around 1865, the print presents a picturesque landscape after a drawing by Félix Benoist.
The waterfall flows through a succession of rocky drops towards a pool in the foreground. Bright passages of falling water contrast with the darker rock faces and dense vegetation. A tall tree rises through the composition, bringing height and balance to the scene.
Small figures appear among the rocks and in the distance. Their presence gives a sense of scale while adding human interest to this dramatic natural setting. Fine details in the foliage and the layered rock formations reward close viewing.
The French title beneath the image identifies the scene as “Cascade de Mortain (Le Saut du Puits)” with the department name “Manche”. The printed credits also name Félix Benoist as the draughtsman.
An attractive nineteenth-century landscape print for collectors of Normandy views and French regional heritage. Its vertical composition and subtle tonal contrasts also make it a decorative piece for framing.
