Longny au Perche Orne Normandy France c1865 Chapel and Religious Procession Print

Description

Longny chapel lithograph presents Notre-Dame-de-Pitié at Longny-au-Perche in the Orne department of Normandy France. Dating from around 1865, the antique print combines a detailed architectural view with a lively religious procession.

The chapel dominates the composition with its richly decorated entrance, tall windows, ornamental pinnacles and steep roof. The careful rendering of the stonework highlights the elegance of the building and its sculptural details.

A large gathering of clergy and worshippers surrounds a processional canopy in front of the chapel. Their clothing and varied attitudes bring movement to the scene. Cemetery crosses, trees and distant buildings complete the setting and give the view a strong sense of place.

The print is after a drawing by Félix Benoist. The printed credits name Tirpenne and Bachelier as lithographers, with figures by J. Gaildrau.

The original caption reads “Chapelle du cimetière de Longni” and includes the department name “Eure”. This is an old caption error: the chapel depicted stands at Longny-au-Perche in Orne.

An appealing piece for collectors of Normandy and Perche views, religious architecture and nineteenth-century French life. The vertical format and finely detailed composition also make it an attractive print for framing.
