Description

Vesali style oil lamp attributed to the Arakan tradition of Burma, present-day Myanmar, and probably dating from the 19th century.

Made from a copper alloy, probably brass, the lamp takes the form of a standing figure holding a shallow bowl in both hands. The figure rests on a circular platform above a flared pedestal decorated with lotus-like petals.

A tall conical headdress ending in a pointed finial gives the sculpture its distinctive silhouette. The expressive face has large almond-shaped eyes, pronounced eyebrows and prominent ears. Several V-shaped bands decorate the chest, while vertical folds define the garment. Bare feet rest on the upper platform of the pedestal.

The open bowl extends into a spout intended to support a wick. The object combines the practical form of an oil lamp with a sculptural human figure. The precise identity of the figure and any ceremonial use of this particular example remain unconfirmed.

The metal has a brown patina with golden highlights on rubbed and raised surfaces. Smooth areas contrast with the incised and relief decoration, allowing the form to be appreciated from the front, sides and back.

The association with Arakan and the Vesali lamp tradition is based on stylistic comparison. A 19th-century date is proposed but has not been independently established.

Condition: surface wear and rubbing, small casting irregularities, deposits in recessed areas and localised oxidation, particularly underneath the pedestal. The underside of the base is hollow. Please examine the photographs for the details and overall condition.
