Description
This African hunter figure depicts a standing man carrying a rifle over his shoulder, accompanied by a shoulder bag and several accessories. Measuring 18.5 cm in height and weighing 824 grams, the sculpture combines an elongated silhouette with carefully articulated details.
A possible Cameroonian origin is suggested, with the Grassfields region and Bamileke or Bamum traditions considered as avenues for attribution. This remains a stylistic hypothesis, unsupported by documented provenance.
The head is particularly distinctive. Its pronounced ridges may represent an elaborate hairstyle or a ribbed head covering, extending towards the back of the head. Prominent eyes, rounded ears and a small pointed beard give the face a strong expression.
The figure wears trousers and stands barefoot on a quadrangular metal base. A strap crosses the torso and connects to a bag at the back. Curved accessories hang around the waist, while the free hand holds an elongated, blade-like implement.
The copper alloy has a mottled brown patina, with golden-yellow metal visible in worn areas. Brass appears plausible, although the precise alloy has not been tested.
