Description
This Thales mechanical calculator is a German-made manual calculating machine, probably dating from the 1920s–1930s. Its black metal housing carries the Thales name in gold-coloured script, complemented by exposed metal controls, pale crank handles and a wooden mounting board.
The machine features nine input-setting levers and a sliding carriage with two numerical registers. Its configuration, comprising a ten-digit revolution counter and an eighteen-digit result register, is consistent with the Thales Model B. This model identification is proposed by comparison with documented examples.
Thales calculators of this type used a pinwheel mechanism derived from the Odhner system. They were designed to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division through a combination of lever settings, crank rotations and carriage movements. Their mechanical operation illustrates an important stage in the history of calculation before electronic office equipment became commonplace.
The long numbered carriage and contrasting materials give this example considerable visual appeal. It would suit a collection of historical calculating instruments, mechanical devices or vintage office equipment, as well as a study or industrial-style interior.
Condition: visible wear from age and use, including dust, scratches, paint losses, tarnishing and oxidation to some metal components. Some numerals and markings show wear. The wooden base has staining, scratches and small areas of damage, as illustrated in the photographs.
Operating condition has not been verified. The calculator is offered in its present condition and may require servicing before use.
