Description
Bronze fertility pendant attributed to the Dogon people of Mali.
The ornament consists of a large circular opening surmounted by two elongated conical forms decorated with horizontal bands. Objects of this type are sometimes described as fertility rings, although they are generally considered pendants or ornaments formerly attached to a textile band and worn around the waist during dance performances.
The paired conical elements are traditionally interpreted as representations of female breasts, associated with fertility and motherhood. They may also recall the pointed thatched roofs of Dogon granaries.
The piece was individually cast and displays the irregular surface, small cavities and asymmetries characteristic of handmade bronze objects. Its warm golden-brown surface shows natural wear and darker deposits in the recessed areas.
The Dogon attribution and fertility symbolism are proposed through comparison with related examples.
