Indian Dhokra Figure – Expressive Miniature Sculpture with Brown Patina

Description

Indian Dhokra Figure – Expressive Miniature Sculpture with Brown Patina

This Indian Dhokra figure is a small metal sculpture depicting a seated character with a prominent stylised face and raised arms. Its closely spaced linear decoration and spiral details suggest an association with the traditional Dhokra metalworking craft.

The face dominates the composition, with elongated eyes, a narrow projecting nose and a clearly defined mouth. Two raised arms frame the figure, each holding an elongated attribute. A circular rim surrounds a raised central element at the top.

Parallel ridges extend around the body and across the back, while a spiral motif decorates the underside. The contrast between the rounded central form and the projecting arms gives the sculpture a distinctive silhouette.

The surface has a dark brown patina, with golden metal highlights on the more exposed areas. The material appears to be a copper alloy, probably brass; its exact composition has not been tested.

The figure may depict a deity in a stylised folk-art form, although a specific identification has not been established. Its date is also undetermined.
