Description
La Rochette in Savoie France is depicted in this original nineteenth-century lithograph dating from circa 1864. Based on a composition by Félix Benoist, this view belongs to the Nice et Savoie series and brings together riverside activity, traditional buildings and the mountainous landscape of the French Alps.
Flowing water forms a prominent feature in the foreground, cascading over a structure incorporating wooden elements. The movement of the water contrasts with the quieter arrangement of buildings beyond, leading the eye from the river towards the town and surrounding slopes.
Traditional houses, a church and a château overlooking the valley contribute to the architectural interest of the scene. Small figures animate the setting and provide a sense of scale, connecting the landscape with the daily life of its inhabitants.
The composition balances the closely observed foreground with the more distant buildings and mountain scenery. Fine lines and tonal contrasts distinguish the water, architecture and vegetation, giving depth to this detailed view of La Rochette.
Printed on wove paper, this antique lithograph offers an appealing subject for collectors of Savoie views, French regional history and nineteenth-century landscape prints. The combination of riverside structures and village architecture also gives the image documentary interest.
Its generous sheet size allows the architectural and landscape details to be appreciated while leaving space around the printed image for presentation and framing.Location: La Rochette in Savoie France.
