Description
Lanslebourg in Savoie France in an original nineteenth-century lithograph dating from circa 1864 based on a composition by Félix Benoist. This Alpine view presents the village beside the River Arc within the mountainous landscape of the Haute Maurienne valley.
The composition places the settlement between steep slopes, with distant snow-covered peaks completing the horizon. The closely grouped buildings emphasise the village’s compact layout and its position along the valley floor. Their modest scale contrasts with the surrounding mountains, giving the landscape a strong sense of space.
In the foreground, a small chapel and a winding mountain path introduce architectural detail and lead the eye towards the village. The route connects the nearer ground with the buildings beyond, creating a gradual passage through the composition. The river provides another link between the settlement and its natural surroundings.
The lithographic treatment combines clearly defined buildings with softer tones in the distant scenery. These tonal variations distinguish the successive planes of the landscape and convey the atmosphere of an Alpine valley. The view brings together religious architecture, village life and mountain scenery in a single composition.
This antique print will appeal to collectors interested in Lanslebourg, the Maurienne valley, Savoie and nineteenth-century views of the French Alps. It also offers a decorative subject for anyone drawn to historic mountain villages and regional architecture.
