Description
Moutiers in Savoie France in an original lithograph dating from circa 1864 based on a composition by Félix Benoist. This panoramic view presents the Alpine town within its mountain setting, bringing together riverside architecture and activity in the foreground.
The river provides a central element in the composition, connecting the different parts of the town. Bridges, clustered houses and church towers create a varied architectural scene beneath the surrounding slopes. The compact arrangement of the buildings contrasts with the broad mountain landscape rising beyond them.
Foreground figures introduce a sense of everyday life and give scale to the view. Their presence helps connect the viewer with the town, while the succession of buildings and distant slopes carries the eye through the composition. The print combines the detail of a townscape with the spaciousness of an Alpine panorama.
Tonal contrasts distinguish the architecture and nearby ground from the more distant mountains. This treatment gives depth to the landscape while preserving the individual character of the buildings. The relationship between the river, bridges and settlement is a particularly appealing feature of the view.
Part of the Nice et Savoie series, this nineteenth-century lithograph offers several collecting themes: Moutiers, Savoie, the French Alps, historic townscapes and riverside architecture. It would make an attractive companion to other views of Alpine towns or a decorative piece displayed on its own.
