Lucas van Leyden Saint John Amand Durand 1880 Print on Watermarked Paper

Description

This Saint John print was produced in 1880 using the Amand-Durand process after a composition by Lucas van Leyden. Printed on watermarked laid paper it offers a finely detailed nineteenth-century interpretation of the earlier engraved model.

The saint stands beneath a radiant halo wearing a flowing mantle. His expressive face and long beard provide a strong focal point while the carefully described folds give weight and movement to the figure. Delicate hatching contrasts with darker passages throughout the clothing.

The model’s “L” monogram is reproduced at the lower left of the image. A visible plate impression surrounds the composition which retains margins on all sides.

The laid paper bears the watermark used by Amand-Durand. A photograph taken with transmitted light shows the structure of the sheet and complements the views of the front and reverse.
