Description

Paris Chatelet Fountain depicted in an original tinted lithograph from 1866, offering an attractive view of one of the historic monuments of central Paris.

The composition centres on the Fontaine du Palmier, its tall column crowned by a winged Victory rising above the square. Sphinxes and flowing water surround the base, while trees and neighbouring buildings frame the scene. Numerous pedestrians in period dress bring the setting to life, providing a charming glimpse of Paris during the Second Empire.

The print bears the French title “Fontaine de la place du Châtelet”. The printed credits identify Philippe Benoist as draughtsman and lithographer, with the figures by Bayot.

Fine architectural detail is combined with a softly tinted background, giving the image depth and atmosphere. The broad paper margins provide an attractive setting for the composition and lend themselves well to sympathetic framing.

This nineteenth-century lithograph would appeal to collectors of antique Paris views, French architectural prints and historic urban scenes. Its combination of monumental architecture and everyday street life also makes it a decorative piece for a study or traditional interior.
