Martigues ink drawing showing the town in 1898 with boats and houses along a canal. Signed with a handwritten dedication apparently dated 1912. Artist unidentified. Pen and ink on paper measuring 14.5 × 9.5 cm.
Description
Martigues ink drawing depicting a view of the town in 1898, with boats, waterfront houses and figures along a canal. This small work on paper bears a handwritten inscription, a dedication and a signature at the lower right.
The composition follows the water between a tree-lined bank on the left and a row of houses on the right. Shuttered windows, small balconies and tiled roofs give the waterfront its distinctive character. Figures standing and walking along the quay bring life to the architectural setting.
Several boats are moored beside the houses, while another occupies the open water to the left. Their hulls, masts and rigging are carefully described in pen. Mooring posts and reflections fill the foreground, leading the eye towards the more distant boats and a bridge.
Fine parallel lines and cross-hatching suggest the shaded façades, foliage and reflections. Lighter strokes describe the movement of the water and the open sky, where a few birds appear above the canal. The contrast between detailed buildings and spacious water gives the scene depth despite its small format.
Inscription and dedication
The inscription reads Un coin des Martigues en 1898, meaning “A corner of Martigues in 1898”. This identifies the setting and the date of the view depicted.
A dedication to a doctor appears below, followed by a signature. The dedication date appears to read 1912. The artist has not been identified, and the 1898 inscription should therefore be distinguished from the execution date of the drawing.
