Description
This Lucas van Leyden Ecce Homo print is an antique reproduction produced using the Amand Durand process in 1880. Printed on laid paper, it depicts Christ Presented to the People, also known by the French title La Présentation au peuple. The composition is reproduced from the work of Lucas van Leyden.
The sheet measures 15.8 × 14.2 cm, with a printed image measuring 11.3 × 8.4 cm. Margins surround the composition, and a clearly visible plate impression frames the image. Photographs show both the front and the reverse of the sheet.
Christ Presented to the People
The central figure of Christ stands on a raised platform, wearing the crown of thorns and a cloak draped around his shoulders. His hands are bound in front of his body, and his head inclines towards the left. The lowered gaze and restrained posture establish the emotional focus of the scene.
Two richly dressed figures stand beside him. Their layered garments and elaborate headwear contrast with the exposed torso and legs of Christ. One stands behind a barrier covered with a fringed textile, while the other appears immediately behind the central figure.
At the lower left, faces and raised hands emerge from the crowd below the platform. These details introduce movement and connect the figures above with the people gathered beneath them. The close arrangement gives the scene an intimate and concentrated character.
Fine lines and expressive detail
The composition rewards close viewing. Fine parallel lines and cross-hatching describe the folds of the cloak, the contours of faces and the shaded architectural background. Differences in the direction and density of the lines distinguish fabric, skin and structural surfaces.
The central cloak creates a series of curved folds that lead the eye down towards the bound hands and bare feet. Strong vertical elements in the background balance these curves, while the fringed covering at the left adds another carefully described texture.
Despite its modest dimensions, the image contains a considerable variety of expressions and gestures. The upright figures, the bowed head of Christ and the hands reaching upwards from the crowd all contribute to the narrative.
An antique reproduction dated 1880
This Lucas van Leyden Ecce Homo print was produced in 1880 using the Amand Durand process. Lucas van Leyden is the artist responsible for the composition being reproduced; the sheet offered here is the nineteenth-century reproduction.
Its appeal lies both in the religious subject and in the detailed rendering of the earlier composition. It is suitable for a collection devoted to biblical imagery, the Passion of Christ or antique reproductions of historical prints.
Laid paper and visible plate impression
The laid paper has a lightly toned appearance. The margins allow the complete composition to be viewed separately from the edges of the sheet. A distinct plate impression is visible around the printed area and can also be seen on the reverse.
