Perte du Rhone antique lithograph dating from circa 1864 depicting the historic river landscape near Bellegarde-sur-Valserine in France.

Known in French as “La Perte du Rhône” this natural curiosity was a narrow rocky passage where the river appeared to disappear between the rocks. The print records the appearance of the site long before the twentieth-century transformation of this stretch of the Rhône.

The composition combines the rocky river landscape with buildings and figures. Fine details invite close examination while the wider view captures the character of this remarkable location.

The site was submerged in 1948 following the filling of the Génissiat dam reservoir. This nineteenth-century lithograph therefore preserves a view of a landscape that can no longer be seen in its original form.
