Description

This vintage black and white photograph shows the ceremonial courtyard of the Tomb of Emperor Khải Định near Hue in central Vietnam.

The view features the remarkable stone figures arranged throughout the courtyard. Mandarins civil and military officials guards horses and an elephant form a symbolic imperial retinue intended to accompany and protect the deceased ruler in the afterlife.

Khải Định was the twelfth emperor of the Nguyễn dynasty and ruled Vietnam from 1916 until 1925. His monumental tomb also known as the Ứng Mausoleum was begun in 1920 and completed in 1931 during the reign of his successor Bảo Đại. Its architecture combines Vietnamese imperial traditions with several Western influences.

The photograph offers an evocative historical view of the courtyard and its sculptures. It is an interesting documentary object relating to the Nguyễn dynasty French Indochina Vietnamese history and the architectural heritage of Hue.
