Gustave Courbet 1881 A Burial at Ornans Wood Engraving by Bellenger

Description

Gustave Courbet’s A Burial at Ornans is presented here in a wood engraving by Bellenger dating from 1881. This nineteenth-century print translates the composition of Un enterrement à Ornans into black and white with detailed engraved lines and contrasting tones.

The scene depicts a rural funeral gathering. The figures form a broad procession across the image with individual faces clothing and gestures contributing to the solemn atmosphere. The horizontal arrangement gives particular emphasis to the assembled community and the surrounding landscape.

Bellenger’s engraving captures the sober character of Courbet’s composition. Dark garments contrast with lighter passages while the treatment of faces and fabric invites close examination. The wide image format preserves the spacious arrangement of the original composition.

This antique print brings together French painting and nineteenth-century wood engraving. It will appeal to collectors interested in Gustave Courbet French Realism traditional printmaking and representations of rural life.

The work offered is the 1881 wood engraving by Bellenger based on Courbet’s painting.
