Description
Frankfurt am Main antique engraving by Friedrich Foltz, published circa 1865, depicting the city skyline, the River Main and the old stone bridge in Hesse, Germany.
The bridge extends diagonally across the foreground, creating a strong perspective towards the waterfront. Its substantial piers and masonry arches are carefully rendered, while small figures and horse-drawn vehicles bring movement to the scene. Sailing boats and smaller craft occupy the river, adding to the detailed portrayal of urban and waterside activity.
Across the Main, a succession of houses and public buildings forms a densely arranged skyline. The cathedral tower rises prominently above the surrounding rooftops. Distant hills and a broad, cloud-filled sky complete the composition, balancing the architectural detail with an atmospheric landscape.
Fine shading distinguishes the stonework, roof surfaces and reflections on the water. The view can be appreciated both as a decorative cityscape and as a historical representation of Frankfurt’s riverside setting.
The lower margin retains the printed title “FRANKFURT a/M.” and the engraver’s credit to F. Foltz. This nineteenth-century print would complement a collection of German topographical views, architectural engravings or historic river scenes.
