Description
An antique historical print published in 1861 depicting The Death of William the Conqueror after J. Gilbert.
The dramatic composition shows the ruler lying on the floor beside a canopied bed in a medieval chamber. A dog stands near his legs, while two figures appear in the doorway in the background. Heavy curtains, carved furniture, stone architecture and scattered objects give the scene considerable visual detail.
Strong contrasts between light and shadow emphasise the sombre atmosphere. Closely worked lines describe the folds of the clothing and hangings, the textures of the furnishings and the depth of the interior.
The French caption reads “XLIX. — LA MORT DE GUILLAUME LE CONQUÉRANT, d’après J. Gilbert”. The right margin bears the publication heading “CHEFS-D’ŒUVRE DE LA GRAVURE MODERNE” and page number 113.
An interesting print for collectors of medieval historical imagery, William the Conqueror subjects and the shared history of Normandy and England. The composition also offers an example of the dramatic treatment of medieval history in 19th-century illustration.
