Children’s Game Engraving 1885 – La Main Chaude, After A. Trupheme

Description

Children’s game engraving, titled “La Main Chaude,” depicts a lively group of girls playing the traditional game known in English as hot cockles. Engraved by Baude after A. Truphème, the print is provisionally dated to the late nineteenth century.

At the centre of the composition, one girl bends forward with her head resting on a seated companion’s lap. The surrounding participants watch closely, smile and gesture, creating a scene full of anticipation.

In this traditional guessing game, a player conceals their eyes and holds a hand behind their back. After another participant strikes the outstretched palm, the player must identify who did so. The game provides the setting for the varied expressions and playful interaction shown here. Explanation of the traditional game.

The engraving pays particular attention to clothing and domestic detail. Dresses, aprons, collars, hairstyles and shoes are carefully rendered. A long wooden bench anchors the group on the right, while curtained windows and figures in the adjoining room extend the scene beyond the foreground.

Fine lines describe fabric folds, hair and the grain of the wooden furniture. The contrast between pale dresses and darker surroundings draws attention to the central players and gives the composition a strong sense of depth.

An engaging print for collectors interested in childhood, historical games, nineteenth-century dress and French genre illustration.
