Description

Cannes watercolour depicts the Old Port beneath the hillside district of Le Suquet. It is offered with an approximate date of circa 1917 and measures 21.2 × 13 cm.

A sailing boat with pale sails occupies the foreground, its dark hull highlighted by a narrow red band. Reflections extend across the quiet harbour water, while a lighthouse stands at the end of the breakwater on the left.

On the right, waterfront buildings and red-roofed houses rise towards Le Suquet’s square tower and church bell tower. Smaller boats are moored along the quays, their masts and reflections adding fine vertical lines to the scene. Distant hills form a subdued backdrop beyond the harbour.

The composition combines carefully described architecture with a restrained palette of ochre, green and blue-grey. The textured paper remains visible through the washes, contributing to the intimate character of this small coastal view.

Its interest lies in the recognisable Cannes setting, the sailing boats and the relationship between the harbour and the old town. It would suit a collection of French Riviera views, maritime watercolours or works on paper depicting historic coastal towns.
