ANTIQUE THAI / SIAM POLYCHROME WOOD BUDDHA – 18th/19th CENTURY

Fine antique carved wooden Buddha, probably originating from Thailand, former Kingdom of Siam, and dating approximately from the 18th to 19th century.

The Buddha is represented seated in meditation, with a serene expression and elongated earlobes. The finely carved hair is arranged in tight curls and the figure wears a deeply carved monastic robe.

The sculpture retains an attractive old polychrome surface, with traces of red, green and brown pigments. The extensive wear and patina are consistent with its age and give the sculpture considerable character.

This type of wooden religious sculpture was intended for devotional use, either in a temple, shrine or private religious setting.
