Description
This Marie Biennier woodcut depicts the Thiou canal in Annecy in the French department of Haute-Savoie. Dating from 1927 this original colour woodcut is signed in pencil “M. Biennier” and numbered 39/50.
The tall composition captures old waterside buildings overlooking the canal. A bridge with several arches closes the middle distance while the architecture is reflected in the rippling water. Dark façades frame a luminous opening in the sky, creating a striking contrast between solid buildings and shimmering reflections.
Black and blue-grey tones are complemented by warm yellow passages in the sky and water. The simplified shapes and rhythmic lines give the scene a strong decorative character associated with interwar printmaking.
A signed and numbered impression
The lower margin carries the handwritten inscription “Bois gravé original” together with the edition number 39/50. The pencil signature appears beneath the image on the right.
Further handwritten inscriptions identify the subject as “Le canal du Thiou, Annecy” and refer to two Paris exhibitions in 1927: the Salon des Femmes Peintres et Sculpteurs and the Salon des Artistes Français. The latter inscription is followed by the initials “M. H.”
These inscriptions add documentary interest to the print, connecting its Annecy subject with the Paris exhibition scene of the period.
