Description

This Amand Durand print, dating from circa 1880, reproduces The Dance at the Court of Herod by Israhel van Meckenem. It is an antique nineteenth-century heliogravure depicting an elaborate court gathering within a Gothic architectural setting.

The sheet measures 39.4 × 31 cm, while the image measures 31.2 × 21.3 cm. The horizontal composition brings together dancing couples, musicians, banquet guests and richly dressed spectators. Surrounding margins allow the complete image to be appreciated.

The Dance at the Court of Herod

The foreground is occupied by a succession of figures arranged across a patterned tiled floor. Couples turn towards one another, with their gestures and positions creating a sense of movement through the room.

The women wear long gowns with sweeping trains and elaborate headdresses. The men’s clothing provides a contrast through shorter garments, fitted legs and varied hats. These differences give each group its own character while maintaining the visual rhythm of the gathering.

The scene is particularly engaging when viewed closely. Faces, hands and folds of fabric contribute to the relationships between the figures. Small dogs at floor level introduce further details beneath the grander activity of the court.

Musicians at the centre

A raised platform occupies the middle of the composition. Musicians stand above the surrounding guests, making their performance a central part of the scene.

Their instruments and playing positions add another collecting interest to the print. Alongside the dancers and costumes, the musicians make this an appealing image for those interested in representations of historical music and court entertainment.

The platform also helps organise the space. Its strong geometric form contrasts with the flowing garments below and provides a visual link between the foreground couples and the architectural background.

Gothic architecture and banquet scenes

Columns, arches and openings divide the interior into several connected areas. The tiled floor draws the eye into the room, while the architectural framework allows different episodes to appear within a single composition.

At the upper right, figures gather around a banquet table. Additional activity is visible through the openings at the left. These smaller scenes reward close examination and give the image a narrative complexity beyond the principal gathering.

The architecture is an essential part of the print’s decorative appeal. Slender supports, shaped arches and detailed wall surfaces provide a setting for the figures without obscuring their gestures or costumes.

A nineteenth-century Amand Durand print

This impression is a heliogravure produced by Amand Durand circa 1880, reproducing Israhel van Meckenem’s composition. The artist’s work supplies the subject and design, while the sheet offered here belongs to the nineteenth-century reproduction.

The heliogravure conveys the fine linear detail of the composition, including the intricate clothing, facial features and architectural elements. Its restrained monochrome appearance allows these details to remain the focus.

For collectors, the sheet offers both a richly populated historical scene and an example of Amand Durand’s reproduction work. The subject brings together religious narrative, courtly dress, dancing and musical performance in one detailed image.
