Description
Leon Lhermitte woodcutters print titled Les Bûcherons, depicting forestry workers in a woodland setting. This large antique print brings together several stages of traditional timber work in a detailed and lively composition.
In the foreground, two men operate a long saw across a substantial fallen trunk. To the right, another worker raises his axe, while a figure further back carries a length of timber on his shoulder. Tools and cut branches scattered across the ground add to the sense of activity.
Tall trees frame the scene and extend towards the upper edge of the composition. Their intricate branches contrast with the lighter sky and freshly exposed wood. The carefully observed gestures and working postures give the image its character, making it an appealing example of rural imagery associated with Lhermitte.
The generous image size allows the details of the workers, tools and woodland to be appreciated. It would suit a collection devoted to French art, traditional crafts, forestry or rural life.
The upper margin bears the printed name LÉON LHERMITTE, with the title LES BUCHERONS beneath the image. Lhermitte’s signature is reproduced within the composition and is not a handwritten signature.
The print is undated and is probably from the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. It is offered as an antique print after Lhermitte; the precise printing process has not been established.
