Description

After Cesare Ripa — Aristocracy allegory engraving from the late 17th to early 18th century, titled “Aristocratia” and accompanied by an explanatory German caption. This antique print presents a crowned female figure seated beneath heavy curtains, surrounded by objects associated with authority, honour and wealth. The complete sheet measures 17.9 × 12 cm. Its compact format contains a detailed composition with clear contrasts between the figure and the shaded background.

The reference to Cesare Ripa concerns the allegorical model and the tradition of his Iconologia. It does not identify Ripa as the engraver of this sheet. The printmaker and precise publication remain unidentified. The composition belongs to the visual tradition in which abstract concepts are represented through human figures, distinctive clothing and carefully selected symbolic objects.

The central personification sits facing the viewer on an ornamental chair. A pointed crown rises above her head, while a veil falls beside her face. Her cloak is secured at the chest and spreads across her arms and lap in broad folds. The formal pose and substantial drapery give the figure a ceremonial appearance appropriate to the political concept named in the inscription.

In one hand she holds a bundle of rods tied together. A laurel wreath rests across her lap near the lower end of the bundle. Her other hand lies beside the curved ornament of the chair. At her feet, an axe rests on the platform. On the opposite side, an overturned container reveals coins, chains and medallions. Each object contributes to the visual character of this representation of aristocracy.

The title “Aristocratia” is engraved beneath the image. Beside it, the German explanation describes government exercised by the foremost persons of a country or city. This caption makes the subject explicit and is an important feature of the sheet. The woman embodies a form of government rather than representing an identified queen or historical ruler.

Heavy curtains frame the scene on both sides. Behind the seated figure, a vertical decorative panel rises towards the upper edge of the image. The treatment of these surfaces creates several layers of depth. Closely spaced engraved lines darken the recesses, while lighter passages bring forward the face, hands and folds of the clothing. The curved platform beneath the chair completes the formal setting.

Other sheets from the same group depict the Year, Arrogance, Instruction, Architecture and Tamed Love, with Italian and German captions. Their related presentation supports the connection with a collection of allegorical subjects. This listing concerns the Aristocratia sheet alone. Its combination of a symbolic figure and explanatory wording makes it particularly suitable for a collection devoted to emblems and historical political imagery.

The engraving rewards close examination through its variety of textures. Cross-hatching gives weight to the curtains and the shaded parts of the costume. More open passages allow the paper tone to provide light within the design. The ornaments of the chair, crown points and small valuables in the foreground contrast with the larger expanses of draped fabric.

This aristocracy allegory engraving also demonstrates how an image can organise a complex subject around a single figure. The viewer can begin with the title, identify the objects and consider their relationship to the seated personification. The arrangement combines a formal representation of authority with details that invite attention at close range.

The complete sheet measures 17.9 cm high by 12 cm wide. These measurements refer to the paper, rather than separate dimensions of the engraved image. The margins are very narrow, and the composition occupies almost the entire sheet. Photographs show both the front and reverse, together with closer views of the figure, attributes and lettering.

Condition includes age toning, small spots and scattered foxing visible on the front and reverse. The engraved image retains clear contrasts, and the title and explanatory caption remain readable. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form part of the description and show the condition of this individual example.

With its crowned personification, numerous attributes and German inscription, this print will appeal to collectors of Cesare Ripa imagery, antique engravings and Baroque allegories. It offers a detailed example of the visual language used to present ideas about government, social rank and authority.
