Description
Cupid Urinating engraving reproduces the distinctive composition created by Joachim von Sandrart in 1640. An unusual combination of mythology and burlesque imagery, it presents the winged god of Love beside an elderly figure wearing spectacles.
Cupid stands on a cushion holding his bow, while the seated figure raises a vessel to collect the liquid. The oval framing brings the two figures closely together, emphasising their contrasting expressions and the comic character of the scene.
The print features detailed work in the feathers, curling hair and richly folded clothing. Dense hatching creates deep shadows around the figures, balanced by lighter passages across the cushion and background. Its compact format rewards close examination.
The lower left inscription reads “Sandrart del.”, identifying Sandrart as the designer. A publisher’s inscription followed by “excudit” appears at the lower right. 1640 is the date of the reference composition; the precise publication date of this edition has not yet been established.
A distinctive antique print for collectors interested in Cupid, classical mythology, allegorical imagery and historical curiosities.
